Yamaha BWS ignition setup?
« on: April 07, 2017, 07:57:35 PM »
Hi all.
I recently rebuilt a racing bws to be a road scooter again. But the previous owner had wiring changed on the ignition.
Now the scooter starts when the ignition is in the OFF position and when turned to on while running. It switches off the engine.

Also, there was a toggle switch connected on the black and white wire going to the cdi unit.

Sounds like a dyslexic auto electrician did the wiring. Have you tried keeping it in the ON position when you go to bed at night and in the OFF position heading off to work? I would give my front teeth (remember I am from Paarl) to switch OFF when going to work. You luckly!!

Trust me when I say that you will best solve your problem by taking your scooter to an auto electrician

Thanks Stan.
Will speak to him.
Just thought someone might know which wires could be swapped around in order for the scrutineering rules at a race track or something.

Could be something as simple as an ON-OFF sticker or ignition plate the wrong way round.
If it runs in the OFF position.....and 'vrek' in the ON position...a quick swap around of the wires at the back of the ignition will fix that.

I guess the added switch on the CDI feed was maybe put there to act like an immobilizer switch..

Personally i would leave it like that...Crooks will have a hard time starting it...

Sounds like a reasonable anti-theft device :-)

Although the BWS is so light someone could just carry it away. Should be very easy to get it back to normal operation.

I agree with the anti theft device. But it starts without a key and even when the steering is locked.

At least the brake light and indicators are working.

so its starts with the switch.....

in other words, the switch is the ignition.

it is then maybe possible that the ignition is busted thats why they added the switch.

have you taken the switch out of the circuit? if you have what does it do?

Not a problem at all Quinie.
I agree with SA SCOOTER - I would just leave it like that and let some crook trying to hot-wire the ignition figure out a solution which he/she isn't going to do too quickly.

If you add up the value of the man-hours that people have spent reading and contributing to this thread, you could have bought and installed several new ignition switches already    :thankyou:
