WATER
« on: February 11, 2018, 12:31:39 AM »
You all know its seriously dry in the western cape. I have police buddies manning water points in the Cape Town CBD and even at this hour (12:20am) he says people are still queuing and they are already breaking up fights.
Where I stay on the west coast the surrounding veld is already just sand. People are selling their livestock because they dont have food for them anymore.
If we dont get continues rain soon everything is going to turn into a desert here.
Even the berg river has'nt came down with fresh water. Its salt 55km up the river. All plant life along the river has died. Farmers cant irrigate with the water and cant give it to the animals.
Last night we had about 5mm of rain. Normal for our summer rainfall pattern. But its not our summer rain fall that is messed up. We dont get rain during the winter. Had way below average the last 4 years.
Ok...so this is not a scooter related post...except for the fact that we are not allowed to wash our cars, bikes, etc. Its almost a status symbol...seeing who's car is the dirtiest.
Dont even hear crickets or frogs at night. Its dead quite...think they all died.
In the mornings the roads are full of mice running about...never seen so many mice in my life. And the tortoises are dying everywhere. People started putting lucern bales out for the bucks. And buckets of water. Some of the animals dont even make it to the feeding points.
Its scary here. We are all trying to save as much water as possible.

I'm CT bound end of the month on a Think Bike event, and honestly am not sure what I'm gonna see. The last time I was in CT was August last year. The picture you paint is a bleak one!!!

Out of interest, you mention the amphibians that aren't evident any longer. Does anyone know what ecologically is going to happen when the rains come back? Where will the frogs and crickets emerge from, and what will happen to the many mice you spotting now? Will there be an outbreak of rodents for a season when natural food is plenty for them?

The heavens will open up soon.

I live in Brackenfell, in a townhouse. My back garden / lawn is protected by 6ft walls, so normally grass grows. Unfortunately for me, and fortunately for my two boys, aged 2,5 and 1 year old, a portion of the lawn is just sand. And here in the Cape, everything is sea sand! So they have a nice sandpit to play in!

Thank God we had a few drops this evening.   :bw:  have managed to fill a few containers from downpipes.
I don't have space for a JoJo Tank, so I've got a whole lot of these 50L Roughtote bins that get filled to keep the plants alive, mostly succulents.
The lawn went about a year ago and got replaced with paving.
Now we pray for more soon
