Looking for rattle can paint
« on: March 12, 2018, 08:29:18 AM »
Morning guys!

So I have had my decals made and printed for my Nitro, now I need to change its colour.

What I want to try and do is get as close to the metallic dark blue of the Yamaha Tenere 660 / Super Tenere 1200.

Obviously on a budget, and will be using Rustoleum plastic some or other as a primer, but where can I get a rattle can as close to that colour as possible? I'm in Cape Town, Northern Suburbs...

He can only supply a VHT engine enamel called New Ford Blue, which he believes is very close to your colour & is willing to provide a test sample to collect from one of his agents in the Northern Suburbs for you to try. I also think that it will end up working out quite pricey.

Have you thought of going Builder's Warehouse or Makro or Midas to check what theyve got? It will be a case of trial and error.

It might cost a bit more, but be less frustrating and time consuming - and you'll get the colour right - if you have it mixed up at an auto paint shop like Paint Chemistry in Maitland, to name but one.

I know Dulux also has a range, Touch Up, that they mix in a can for you.

I kind of prefer something off the shelf, for easy touch ups.... That means cheaper as well....

I've been to Builders Express in Tyger Valley, as well as Trend DIY, and Brights in Stikland.

I know there's a Dulux or Plascon shop in Somerset West, and will try and find out if there's one closer to me, but I think the Checkers will be the best bet for the area I stay in (loooong story, saw two guys in the Checkers yesterday after 7PM, with no shirts on, only their shorts!)

Stan, doesn't the engine enamel have to be baked? My plastic will melt in the wife's oven!

Hi Vincent - the supplier has unfortunately just confirmed that the paint is in fact not metallic, after all, but to answer your question, I am uncertain - you'd  need to obtain details on the VHT website.

Thanks! Apparently Pearl Blue MIGHT be the colour I'm looking for.

Will go and check it out at Builders on Friday, when I'm on motorized two wheels!

Vincent, I think you can bake with UV I.ie.  In the sun. Or use a heat gun for a slight distance.

Thanks Motor1 and Stan!

Found what I was looking for! Rustoleum Cobalt Blue metallic....

AND it doesn't need to be baked!
