Bigger Variator ???
« on: June 24, 2018, 03:49:04 AM »
Maybe some of you had this issue before and can give some advice.

My 150 Loncin finally decided its engine had enough. The past few days I did a rebuild(my oldest son seized it last December). It started first time, but the engine sounded as if its going to fall apart. There is play on the small and big ends of the conrod. The crank case bearings is shot. The casings has been repaired so many times, I fear it will fall apart if I open it up again. The fact that it started and ran proves that these engines can handle almost anything you throw at them.

Also discovered the frame broken and cracked a few places. (ramping the scoot at the Zone 7 track..LOL) I stripped the plastics and welded the frame properly. Added some guzzets here and there. Overall appearance is fair for its age now.

I managed to find a 200cc engine. (i think its a 200) Stripped and rebuild the engine and everything is still OK with it. All complete, except for the variator and clutch pulleys

The 150 carb will work on it. Will just raise the needle to enrich it a bit.

I managed to built a nice quite exhaust that fits perfectly.

Here my problem. The clutch fits perfectly. But the Variator that came from the 150 has a smaller dimension hole. The shaft it fits on (crank) is about 2mm thicker than the shaft of the 150. I could make the hole on the two variator pulleys bigger, but i cant do it with the bush that slides over the shaft. Thus...i need a bigger variator. It seems the 835 belt will fit as well.

Anyone knows what size I need....and where to get? Or perhaps a 2nd hand one lying around?

One is the 15mm shaft and one is the 17 mm shaft.

I need the variator and bushing that will fit on the 17mm shaft.

I had the CPI GTR 150 which also took the larger variator pulley.I had to import from overseas though as at that stage-8 years ago- no-one in this country was importing. This is one of the reasons the CPI used to balega bigtime.

Started it up this morning. Wow..sweet!! Just had to transplant the coil, pickup, etc from the old engine as the wiring did not match to the scoot.

Obviously the main jet is too small as it splutters from 4500rpm and up. I have some bigger jets...will swop around and see which size works. It idles perfect..and excellent throttle response...up to 4500...

Also this engine had an oil cooler, which i do not have. Just installed a loop oil pipe. I dont think the oil cooler will make such a huge difference!? I noticed the bigger engine had a slightly bigger fan, so hopefully its sufficient.

Going to phone around today. Will report back if i find the 17mm ID Variator.

Did you ever find the bigger variator pulley assembly?

HI. I got some solid advice from Azgoth in Cape Town.
Use the old smaller variator. Just get the bigger bushing (17mm id) and drill the roller plate hole a bit bigger. He also sent me a bigger bushing and I drilled the hole bigger.
Installed the whole lot this past weekend....and it works perfectly.

he sent me the top one in the photo. The only thing i had to do was to buy a step drill and ream the hole in the roller plate from 15mm to 17mm. Easy if you have a drill press.

Sounds like a lot of work but if you have the know-how and tools what a pleasure.I had to import my variator at that stage and it cost me an arm and a leg and 6 months waiting thanks to the excuse for a Post Office.Glad it all worked out for you!

One thing i liked about the 17mm variator is that the OD of the variator was larger which means the belt could move further up the pulley thereby increasing your top-end with the right rollers of course.

Yeah...i thought about that, but since this scooter is now being passed down to my oldest son in Matric, i want him to stick to the speed limit.  Its taken a lot of money to get him to matric...i cant afford speeding tickets now...
